Ours is more than a bag; you carry our story of creativity, resilience and empowerment. The story of Nigerian women artisans who weave the intricate Asoke and Akwete, the women who put together the tie-dye Adire, for the young African bag makers. Our goal is to keep the jobs in Nigeria, not China. Keep our Naira strong. Nigeria First !!!!
Before COVID-19, a client came to our showroom, which has over 2500 array of promotional products, corporate gifts, awards, souvenirs and keepsakes. She wanted 1000 lunch bags within two weeks! Her choice was a canvas lunch bag I bought in the USA, though made in China. (The only thing not made in China is humans)The USA vendor did not have stock. The manufacturer in China will require a minimum order quantity of 3000 pieces with 60 days lead time.
Out of curiosity, I cut the bag just to see the content, and I bought the material and accessories in Lagos market, and we made our first sample, which was approved. Our client quickly ordered 1000 lunch bags. We met the target with no quality issues. This opened the door for import substitution and diversification through the local manufacturing of bags for Dugo.COVID-19 presented an opportunity for us to pivot! I got a confidence boost when Eventful had an online exhibition, I took part in it, to my shock, we got enquiries from the UK, USA and a multinational that wanted a back-to-work bag and package ordered from us. We started producing and branding utility bags for Stay Safe Essential Kits using various locally sourced materials. I love to create, and seeing the finished products gives me so much joy.
Today, Dugo is at the forefront of local manufacturing of bags and accessories using Afrocentric materials like Ankara, Aso-oke, Adire, Akwete, Kente, fused with Jute, Jeans, Canvas, leather, etc.
We Manufacture School bags, lunch bags, toilet bags, laptop bags, utility bags, fashion bags, gift bags, make up bags under our label B.A.S by Dugo (bags, Accessories & Souvenirs).
Above all is the social impact and empowerment, especially for women and young people, because the bulk of the materials we use for our bags are hand-woven and tie-dyed by Nigerian women in the rural areas, thus lifting them out of poverty. The multiplier effect in supporting women-owned businesses is transformational. Leveraging the Dugo brand, which provides total creative solutions in business Promotion with in-house capacity for various customisation, we are raising the bar by fusing eco-friendly materials with our authentic Nigerian fabric.
